Ductile bulk metallic glass.
We report on experimental evidence of pronounced global plasticity measured in monolithic Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 bulk metallic glass under both bending and unconfined compression loading conditions. A plastic strain of 20% is measured, never before seen in metallic glasses. Also, permanent deformation and a strain exceeding 3% before failure is observed during bending of 4 mm thick samples. To ...
متن کاملEffect of Yttrium Addition on Glass-Forming Ability and Magnetic Properties of Fe–Co–B–Si–Nb Bulk Metallic Glass
The glass-forming ability (GFA) and the magnetic properties of the [(Fe0.5Co0.5)0.75B0.20Si0.05]96Nb4−xYx bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have been studied. The partial replacement of Nb by Y improves the thermal stability of the glass against crystallization. The saturation mass magnetization (σs) exhibits a maximum around 2 at. % Y, and the value of σs of the alloy with 2 at. % Y is 6.5% larger ...
متن کاملFabrication of Soft Magnetic Fe-based Nanoalloy
The Fe-Ni-Sb-B amorphous alloy has been prepared by a solid-solid chemical reaction of ferric trichloride, nickel chloride, antimony chloride and potassium borohydride powders at room temperature. The inductive couple plasma study indicates that the resultant is composed of Fe 5.38 %, Ni 56.19 %, Sb 29.02 % and B 0.44 %. The XRD and thermal analysis show that the alloy is a non-strict sense amo...
متن کاملSoft magnetic ternary iron-boron-based bulk metallic glasses
Ternary iron-boron-based bulk metallic glasses sBMGsd were explored exhibiting capability of thick amorphous casting at least 1 mm in rod diameter or 0.5 mm in plate thickness, excellent soft magnetic properties with saturation magnetization 1.56 T and coercivity smaller than 40 A/m, and electrical resistivity larger than 200 mV cm. The BMG alloys represented by the formulas MaFebBc are based o...
متن کاملExtraordinary plasticity of ductile bulk metallic glasses.
Shear bands generally initiate strain softening and result in low ductility of metallic glasses. In this Letter, we report high-resolution electron microscope observations of shear bands in a ductile metallic glass. Strain softening caused by localized shearing was found to be effectively prevented by nanocrystallization that is in situ produced by plastic flow within the shear bands, leading t...
